I. Lanyu, home of the flying fish, is an island southeast of Taiwan. A variety of creatures
can be seen in its neighboring seas all year round. They are also the primary source of food
of the Tao, the aboriginal people there.
Flying fish come to Lanyu each spring and are considered as gifts from Gods by the
Tao people. Therefore, there are some traditional customs for the catching of the fish. At the
beginning of the flying fish season, the Tao people dress up to pray for an abundant harvest
of fishing in a ceremony. The men sleep in the daytime and go fishing at night. The women
catch crabs and make taro cakes for the hungry men who return from fishing.
The Tao people respect the nature and live in harmony with it. The unique culture and
rich ecology there are wonderful treasures that should be well preserved.
